The Knowledge Partnership Program (KPP) at KAUST is a service designed to connect industries — from SMEs to large companies — with KAUST’s advanced research, labs, and academic expertise.
Through the KPP portal, companies can submit technical or R&D challenges, request consultations, access KAUST’s core labs and scientific talent, and collaborate with researchers to develop solutions.
The goal is to foster innovation, support technology development, and enable industries lacking internal R&D resources to benefit from KAUST’s research ecosystem and resources.
A dedicated, transparent partnership program (like KPP) can bridge the gap between academia and industry, making scientific resources accessible to companies without R&D.
Flexible collaboration paths — from consultations to full lab access — help accommodate different industry needs and sizes (SMEs, large companies, startups).
Offering structured support and clear guidelines encourages companies to engage without fear of complexity or unclear process.
Many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) — and even larger industries — face a common set of problems: limited or nonexistent internal research and development capacity, lack of advanced laboratory infrastructure, and insufficient access to cutting-edge scientific expertise. Without such resources, it is difficult for them to innovate, solve technical problems, or develop new products.
Additionally, bridging the gap between academia and industry often proves challenging: communication barriers, unclear procedures for collaboration, and mismatches between academic research and industry needs can hinder effective cooperation. For a world-class research institution like KAUST, there is also a challenge in providing industry partners with a straightforward way to engage, without overwhelming them with bureaucracy or technical complexity.
Hence, the main challenge for KPP was to design a portal and program that: (1) allows industries of various sizes to easily request help; (2) provides transparent, accessible processes for collaboration; (3) matches industry challenges with appropriate academic resources; and (4) ensures that technical support is delivered in a flexible, scalable, and business-friendly manner.
KAUST addressed these challenges by building the Knowledge Partnership Program as a dedicated portal and service framework that streamlines collaboration between industry and academia. The KPP website provides clear information about eligibility, services, and how companies can submit a request.
Through KPP, industries can submit technical problems or innovation needs; KAUST evaluates the request based on its resources and capabilities — then, if accepted, connects the industry with researchers, labs, and technical consultants.
KAUST also offers additional support mechanisms — for example, giving companies access to its core labs and research infrastructure, offering scientific/technical consultations, and enabling internships or collaborations with students (Master’s/PhD) to assist in solving the challenge.
Furthermore, the program defines clear guidelines and eligibility criteria (e.g. applicability to SMEs and larger companies) to maintain transparency and manage expectations. As part of a broader innovation ecosystem, KPP ties into other support structures at KAUST — including research commercialization, technology transfer, and startup/SME support — enabling a full path from challenge to potential product or solution.

Because of KPP, many industries — including SMEs without internal R&D — gained access to advanced scientific research, lab facilities, and expert consultation that would otherwise have been out of reach. This enables them to solve technical problems, develop new products or services, and innovate in ways previously only possible for large corporations.
KPP has become a “gateway” for industry-academia collaboration at KAUST. According to internal KAUST reports, since the soft launch in 2021 the portal has handled multiple requests, some of which led to further cooperation with core labs or partner networks — showing the program’s ability to generate real, actionable outcomes.
For small and medium enterprises especially, KPP lowers the barrier to innovation: they can access equipment, expertise, and support via KAUST, and benefit from consultation, lab access, internships, or technical collaborations — making innovation more inclusive and accessible.
Overall, KPP strengthens the link between academic research and real-world industry needs — positioning KAUST not only as a research institution but as a partner for technological development, economic diversification, and industrial innovation in line with broader national goals.
